Folks, we have a winner!!! clap.gifclapclap.gif

I bow to your expertise, Allen. bowdown.gif

I figured that would be an extremely difficult ID without the head. I guess it's basically a woodpecker?

    Here are the pictures.

It's a large, almost magestic bird with a chest that resembles a hawk, I thought.

    I'm really digging this bird.

Sorry about all the pictures, I just couldn't choose between these.

Here's a shot of him praying that I don't take any more pictures of him. :giggle

Thanks for lookin' and playing along.

This was an easy one for me since I see one almost everytime I go shooting. I'm sure Allen is correct in calling it a Northern, it's just that my Audubon field guide calls it a Common and makes no reference to Northern.headscratch.gif

Wow! those are great shots. I haven't managed to get a closeup yet. :cry I have
Sibley's by Audubon and it lists two flickers, the Gilded & Northern. To be more
specific, yours is the Yellow-Shaffed (Taiga/Eastern) strain of Northern.

I did get a pair going thru their mating ritual. See pics here.

Thanks for sharing the excellent photos.

Time for a new Field Guide. rolleyes1.gif

I have the Audubon Sibley Guide, same one Allen uses.

So you see 'em all the time, eh? This is the first one I've ever seen. Tell you what, I'll trade you a couple dozen cow birds for one flicker. deal.gif

Thanks a lot, Allen. I appreciate the nice comments. I have the same book as you.

Those mating ritual shots are facinating and very, very cool!!! That must have been something to watch.

You may be right! Mine is over 15 years old.rolleyes1.gif It's the small leather bound edition. Maybe they didn't have space for big words like "Northern".:D
