Limitation on date for historical photos?

Is there any limitation in the SM software (or EXIF specs) regarding the date?
We have scanned/ photographed a number of historical photos (from the family).
We would also like to include some of our family tin types as soon as we figure out the best way to digitize them as neither scanning nor photographing seems to work well so far.
I would like to edit the date to reflect the approximate date of the original photo (e.g. May 05, 1899) or some of the family paintings which are older still. Will SM sort this properly? Does anyone know if the EXIF specs will have a problem with this backdating of photos? Any recomendations on another way to do this? Should I include in comments that the date was changed or will this be obvious? Anything else I should think about.
