dishes, laundry and soccer practice got in the way!
So, the owl story is: We could hear them. Then one Sunday when I was with the boy at soccer my husband saw one of them - up close. Told me it sat on his arm and everything .....
So just before I left for Bryce & Zion, I saw one sitting on a power pole - found it the next day too - before sunrise.
So this a.m. I'm sitting in my robe, coffee in hand, making progress on my Bryce shots and get the following call:"Come see the owl". So I run, with cam and 70 - 200 in hand, in my robe and slippers into the neighbors yard. And thats my owl story!!!! I am just so completely thrilled with this.....

Wow, these are awesome! I really like the expression on #3.. the owl looks a little ticked off Great pictures, thanks for posting these.
Thanks. She was trying to warn me (and my huge dog) away from her young. They fly silently - I totally missed her first fly by. Really cool stuff.
Thanks for commenting.

Thanks Awais. Not all owls are strictly nocturnal. This one (and presumably this species) hunts alot in daytime - especially overcast days.
And she has young to feed, so that takes lots of hunting. Birds are so amazing!
Hi saurora
I'm convinced it is a great horned owl. I've checked photos and web sites, and listened to recordings of the calls of several species - it adds up to great horned as far as I can tell.
She is quite magnificent, isn't she.....
Thanks, Ivar. The amazing thing about birds is they are probably already near you - you just need to start really looking at them. We have a woodland and a river near by and several feeders in the yard, so we've got lots of birds - and that brings the big birds of prey....
Excellent captures Ann, and with a 70-200. So were you like sitting on the branch next to her?
Hi Nick
Thats one more visual of me best left to the imagination...
No, I actually only saw the owlet - was trying to get closer and closer, and momma started flying by my head to warn me away. She flew by 3 times. The first I didn't hear her - absolutely amazing how something that big doesn't make noise when it flies.
And of course, those shots are all heavy crops - I really wasn't prepared for BIF shots.
