Well, the top one looks like what I would call a Desert Daisy.
I'm no flower expert, but it does look like it's Daisy related.

Thanks for the input, Zoom Raider. I'll check out the daisy idea. I think the second one is a thistle after the bloom is gone. They are common in the area.

I'd guess the first one is of the dianthus family (carnation family).

Thanks for the tip, Brian. They definitely aren't daisies. I'll let you know if I figure it out for sure. Of course, a trip to the library one of these days would probably solve the problem. Or even to a book store that sells books on wild flowers. :D

    I will solve this mystery.

    Someday.

maybe a type of "Richardson's Geranium"? Look at the third pic down on this web page . . .

    http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/geranium.htm

But the stem and flower buds do look more "carnation-like" (dianthus)??

I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.

Thanks, John. :): It is confusing isn't it? Your are right about the stem and, because of that, I'm thinking that it is from the carnation family. But the flower doesn't look anything like a carnation and there is a definite similarity with the Richardsons Gernaium. I am leaving on a 2 1/2 week trip tomorrow to the Mediterranean, but will do the research when I return. Now I am intrigued!! It has to be a "common along roadsides" weed. But which one!ne_nau.gif

    I appreciate your input!
