1st Trip to Vegas...

My family went to Bryce/Zion and Vegas for the first time in April. We stayed at the Flamingo Hotel, one of the oldies, but easier on the wallet, and right in the middle of the Strip.

The Flamingo is pretty good for kids because of the birds; this crowned crane was very friendly:

We got a room with a view of the Strip, and it was great. We could even watch the Bellagio fountains go off. Here's a pano:

Vegas is all about the night. Unfortunately, we didn't get to experience much of that with our baby, except from our room!

(no tripod on this one)

Security even stopped by to say "hi" one night when Gareth was bawling his head off (he was teething). I took the "opportunity" of our sleeplessness to experiment with my new tripod:

Caeser's Palace

We did get to see the Celine Dion show at Caeser's, and it was okay, but we're not really Celine fans (it was a free show for us). Of course, we sailed off into the sunset on our starship:

Being the geeks we are, we had to eat at Quark's...

Hope you enjoyed this quick look at Vegas. It was fun, but overall I would have rather had more time at Bryce and Zion.

Hey Chris - nice shots. I was there this week for the first time on business and got some long exposure practice. Looks like you and I shot some of the same things. I agree with you...Vegas just not terribly interesting to me except to take pics.

VERY nice pano - I really liked the architecture that I saw.

By the way, what equipment and settings were you shooting with for the night shots? I'd like to know to compare with my Exifs also to see how I can get better.

Thanks, Mike! I think all of the shots were with my 20D and 17-85 IS lens.

On the Caeser's night shots (I think I combined 3 of them to add some extra moving head/taillights), I was trying to increase the exposure time so it was: ISO 100, F/20, 15 seconds.

For the Paris shot, it was handheld and I was trying to minimize exposure time: ISO-400, F/4.5, 1/10 second. Similarly for the Flamingo: ISO-400, F/4, 1/30 second. I could have gone with a higher ISO, but I felt comfortable with those exposure times and IS on.

Definitely a great place to experiment, especially if you're not into gambling!

    Appreciate the comments!
