Isolated Lillies

Daylilies are one of the most common and abundantly used landscape plants in Southern California. They are an attractive and colorful plant and seem to do their job nicely. You become so accustomed to seeing them in masses that you don't pay them much notice. I was sitting in my car at a local park and snapped these shots out of my car window. When I viewed them on the computer, I decided that once isolated to itself, a daylily is really quite elegant.

First shot the background was ok...not the greatest but passable.

The 2nd shot came out with a perfectly ugly, mid-gray background. It looked like a gray-card! So I decided to fill in the background with black by using the lasso, inverting the selection, filling with black and voila!!! Old stuff for more experience Photoshoppers, but fun for the less skilled, I imagine.

So, I decided to fill the other 2 shots as well...

Gus I have fought with that blankety-blank lasso tool for a long time. For some reason, this time I got the "hang" of it. I think it certainly helps when you have very sharply defined color spaces. Plus, like you said, I learned something new this time using it I had not figured out before...using the "shift-click" instead of "grow" controled what the lasso enveloped. clap.gif

Nice series. You have the patience of Job to use that lasso tool. It makes me go cross-eyed. But the effect here is beautiful. clap.gif

Excellent work. The background sets off the flowers most effectively. thumb.gif
