Feeding frenzy at Bolsa Chica

This past Sunday I spent the afternoon at Bolsa Chica and ran into quite a feeding frenzy. Jeff Lapoint showed some awesome shots of terns coming out of the water (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=36048). Well, these guys would suspend themselves in the air and look until they spotted some fish and then dive:

And this is what they would come up with....

But terns weren't the only ones feasting that afternoon...

Wonderful series Erich! The hover and dive are spectacularclap.gif We must have been shooting together and not have known it--I was there on the cement bridge until a bit before sunset on Sunday. Your son is a real trooper! I was getting cold when the sun started to set but he looked like he was in for the long haul!

Thanks Jeff. I think we were shooting together without knowing it. I was the one with the kid in tow. I hope he didn't kick up too much dirt!

Nah, he was great. How'd ya bribe him into being the monopod sherpa? Are these from the 70-300IS? They look awesome! Do you do alot in post? I was the guy in the blue Chargers visor...

Great shots, Erich!!! Everywhere I turn tonight I see terns.....bad one, I know! rolleyes1.gif It's not surprising....they have been hanging out at Bolsa hot and heavy the past few weeks. Looks like they've taken over the joint! I think you did a great job on the first shot of the tern hovering. That is such a pretty pose. The color of the water was so pretty on Sunday...I notice that in your shots as well. Must be great to take your son along...I miss mine being that age!!! thumb.gif

    Thanks for the comments everyone!

I also like the first shot the best. It is such an interesting pose!

I was using the Canon 70-300 IS f/4-5.6 lens. I process the images with Adobe Camera RAW in CS2. Post-processing is mainly cropping and contrast enhancement. Depending on the shot I'll play with the median filter in LAB for noise reduction. I don't think I do a good enough job with CS2 yet. I usually use DxO for my other lenses but they don't have a module yet for this one....

The best part was being able to spend time taking photos and being with my son at the same time. Just can't have enough of those moments!

There were rocks, dirt, and a stick. Who needs Gamecube? :D

Here's the little bugger... Now there's wildlife for you.
