I never opened my Canon strap for that very reason. I use an Optech strap with quick release connectors - it's much more comfortable, doesn't call out to would-be thieves and doesn't make me a walking billboard.

I use the strap from my old Elan. It still says "Canon," but not "digital," and looks a lot older (and is much more comfortable).

Straps are for pansies (and people who don't use brackets). I use one (really 2) only when my situation dictates a 2 camera set-up. I don't like how they make my suit fit wrong, and they scream geek. I have 2 unopened Canon straps because I don't like to advertise, the straps I do have are some no name brand which I cut the tags off of like I cut the tags and badges off my Lowepro Stealth Reporter 300aw. Hopefully one day I will be making enough dough to get a bit...I mean assistant to hold my camera (I can say this because I assisted for 4 years).
