Trivia question:
How did Mono Lake (and the whole Mono area) get its name?
Answer:
Mono lake has no outcome, it only evaporates. Hence its astonishing 10% alkalinity (yuck! you can charge your batteries right off its waters:-).
Fish does not live there. But the "alkaline fly" does. Fly pupae was the primary food source for the local native tribe (it's said it tastes and looks like rice, but I never tried:-). The neighbour tribes called them "monoche", meaning "fly eaters". The ending of this word was lost to centuries, but the "mono" part stuck..
