It's the second for me - I like what you're getting with that angle.

    Well..
I'd actually like to see the angle of #3 with the red coloring... but if you aren't going to reshoot... definitely #3... great shot..

thanks all - the majority seem to prefer number 3 but that's not my favourite - I may go with the majority, I dunno ne_nau.gif .

I don't know if I'll have time to reshoot but I'll try, and see how it turns out.
I'm with #3 as well, nice shot.

I like #2 and the last one with the rim of the glass cropped out.

    Neat idea! thumb.gif

I prefer the second shot also, where the focus is truly on the layer of oil.

i like the idea of water and oil creating layers to be lamina a lot, but i dont think this composition works.

with some funky lighting and background i think it could.

otherwise like a big flat container where you could mess about with DOF and lighting over a larger surface area highlighting the areas of oil & water may work better.

    Adrian,

I like the last one the best but I would try a slightly different approach. Maybe closer in with a good macro shot and cropped so you don't see the glass. Just the layers of oil. Play around with different lighting (strong directional lighting may work here).

Erich, thanks for the thought, the big issue is that I'm at the limits of what the camera can do (it's only a P&S).

I tried cropping out the glass but I felt that it wasn't obvious what the subject was.

I don't have alot of equipment but I tried a halogen lamp but it was too harsh.
But I have more ideas, now I just have to find time to reshoot.
