I am a new Pro subscriber, and I was wondering whether anyone knows if the templates one purchases from sites such as Allwebco (some designs especially for photographers) will work on Smugmug?

Unfortunately, no, they won't. I recommend starting here, and once you have a basic understanding of what you want, we'll get you going on customizing your site!
