I stopped by Lago d'Averno (http://www.ulixes.it/english/e_pg02dfr06b.html) on my way home yesterday, and even though I didn't get close enough to a mating pair I did photograph some individual male Violet Darters.
Canon 20D + 100mm macro. Aperture priority F8 with a -2/3 exposure bias. Minimal post processing (some of these images I could have printed from the camera) and no cropping.
Those dragonflies are less than 3" long -distance from the end of the lens to the subject was less than 10". You just have to move real slowwwwwwwwww.... :photo
For more images see my Dragons and Damsels gallery: http://dalantech.smugmug.com/gallery/1467293

Will do, and thanks for the comments! I'll be stopping by the lake on my way home from work tomorrow.

It takes a lot of time and patience. If a dragonfly takes off then freeze -if it comes right back, or close to, where it took off then try again to get close. If it takes off and lands away from where it was sitting then you might not be able to get close. Sometimes they get territorial and you can use it to your advantage...
