White Tail Deer Family

I've been trying to get pictures of these deer for several weeks. They live around my property and will come out into the pasture with the horses at dusk and even during mid-day... but when I go to get the camera.. they leave.

I captured the following series just before sunset. It was quite shaded down this alleyway between my pasture and the woods, but I shot this on RAW and then really bumped up the light to bring them out a bit more. Not the best pictures, but the best I've been able to do so far...

In the first pic.. the big doe on the left is, I believe, the mother to all of these deer. She's actually a bit curious... I've seen her behind my stable a lot and I'll talk to her and she always takes a few steps forward and doesn't bolt until one of the others does.

Considering the low light you got some excellent shots Raian. If you know when and where they show up, just get there before they do and set up your camera. If you are not in the way of where they walk through then they will hardly bat an eyelash at your presence. I have found that deer mainly get spooked when you try to approach them. But if you are already there then just sit still and they will approach you.

Nick, thanks for the advise! I usually see the deer first and have to run into the house to get my camera. I was actually walking toward these deer as I was shooting ;)

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
