I just came across this fairly thorough explanation on Photoshop layers if anyone is interested in learning more about them. It's a two part series. Part 2 was just posted recently.

Part 3 on layers just posted here. It covers flattening layers, linking layers, masks, layer groups, layer opacity, blend modes, layer styles and blend if settings. Seems like useful stuff to me if you aren't a PS layers expert already.
