Tinting b/w portraits

Am I correct in thinking that a lot of professional portrait photographers tint many of their black and white images? I've been browsing a number of sites and have noticed that the skin tones often take on a sort of bronzed effect.

Either this tinting has been applied or my monitor needs calibrating. If this is indeed tinting how would I achieve this effect with a digital conversion and is it suitable for all portraits?

you can go image>mode>grayscale (at 8 bits) then click on duotone and go thru a multitude of toning variations-

optikverve has a free plugin that you can use for toning-

try http://www.gormanphotography.com/gorman.html for a toning bw conversion (my favorite right now)-

go to andy's tutes on bw conversion-

    yada yada yada-

    google for it-

more ways than you can count-

I hope this helps and that I'm understanding your question correctly-

I use volume 2 of http://www.1clickactions.com action sets. There's a range of tones and split tones. Run the actions and then move the opacity slider to suit the image.
