Hi Y'all,

I've been shooting at St. Augustine for the past few months. Everytime I go I lug quite a few lenses with me and then I ended up taking most of my shots with the 80-400mm lens. Now I really like that lens but I have other lesess that are a bit sharper but I kept using the 80-400 because its so dang handy and I'm so dang lazy. So I decided to travel light and leave the 80-400 home and instead I just loaded up ole Beach Rolly http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/1558114 with my 500mm, 300mm, 70-200mm, 28-70mm, tripod, goodies bag, water bottles and my water fan and headed on out.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

You must me able to come very close considering the focal length or are they extremely cropped?

    Great series, wel done!

    Thanks for sharing.

Just leave your 80-400 with me Harry, you don't need it getting these kinds of shots. I like #2 and 8. thumb.gifthumb.gif

    Dick.

The rookery allows you to get very close to the birds. The birds are in trees surrounded by gator filled water so they are not afraid of the humans. When I reviewed my past shots I saw that most of my shots were taken at under 300mm so the 70-200 with a 1.4 Tc would allow me to get just about most of the shots I had been getting with the 80-400. These shots have been only slightly cropped for composition.

    Thanks.

Hi Harry, Nice set of photos. I like all of them, although it would have been nice if both the tri-colored heron chicks were sharp! clap.gif

    Another splendid series, Harry. thumb.gif

While in CA last week, I shot a bunch of snowy egrets which I still have to process. A cursory inspection tells me that these pure white birds are harder to photograph than one would think. You make it look so easy. :bluduh

With the 80-400 at home I had room for an extra water bottle :D. It does get hot on that boardwalk.

Thanks Glenn. It would have been niice wouldn't it. I actually had shots where both were sharp but none had a pose to match the one chick on the frame right.

Thanks Joel. I spent a long tine blowing out every egret I shot. Ron Reznick's training was a turning point for me with those type of shots.

Not to worry Al. The Coronas are alway for the post-shoot portion of the day. A fair number were consumed when I got home after baking on that boardwalk all day. :slurp

Nah. Mike, they ain't tired of me. I'm just too darned amiable for that. "lol4

I used my 70-200 zomm a lot so I wasn't w/o a zoom. I just made separate walkthroughs with each lens and shot what was in reach of th elens.
