As for the bokeh, these thistles were at the edge of a lake inlet so the background was the hilly shore on the other side - 40 or 50 or so feet away.
These a bit cropped, but I was somewhere below 20 feet away - pretty close.
These are fantastic. The compositions are just incredible -- I love those thistles. I imagine you spend a lot of time out in the field looking for shots like this. I'd say your diligence paid off. I don't think I've ever seen better goldfinch shots anywhere.
