Speedring for an SB600?

I am intersted in using a softbox with my SB-600 ( a photographer friend showed me how he used his SB800 in a self-rigged speedring and box) but I am having trouble finding a speedring and box - a local shop said they had one, would be there yesterday, but it wasn't. So, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks, G

    Gavin,

A "speedring" is a device to mechanically couple light modifiers, including softboxes, to a flash head or monolight head. The head itself provides attachment to a tripod and the physical support for the attachment (softbox in this case.)

An SB-600 is not designed to support anything of weight, so there is no such thing as a simple speedring to mate to a softbox, because you still have to support the softbox.

If your friend has come up with a solution, please copy it and use that instead. It would be nice if you could share the solution here.

On the other hand, if your handy at simple fabrication, you could design a simple mount for the softbox to mount directly to a stand, and simply insert the SB-600 into the rear of the softbox. A little packing with open-cell foam, to hold the flash in place, and you have a simple, portable, battery powered solution.

Simple! (I think I already said that.:):)

    Thanks Ziggy53

My friend used the softbox as a handheld device for close portrait work - as I recall, he had some brackets and rubber bands and velcro - maybe more - to suspend the SB-800 inside the speedring - he would hold the speed ring and move the softbox where he wanted it. Natually he has more elaborate setups but he uses this in quick simple settings. I liked the ease and simplicity which is why I was excited when the photo shop said they had a bracket to hold an SB-600 within the speed ring - but, I am done with that shop and won't call them again. As you've suggested, I'll make a speed ring /bracket contraption this weekend and call it done.

    Thanks,

    Gavin

Yes - there is a speed ring bracket
clap.gifAh ha! for those that want to use a soft box on a hot shoe flash (like an SB-600) - Photoflex makes one. I got one last night - the bracket screws into the the speed ring and then the flash slides into the bracket - the bracket can then be hand held or has a point to fasten to a light stand.

From a local shop - only one guy in the whole shop knew it existed. On the Photoflex website it is here:

It is listed as an accessory to the LiteDome XS but i've already used it with another box as well.

here is what the bracket looks like:
