Help me break down my cognitive dissonance

I think I am nearing pulling the trigger for my first L series lens, the Canon EF 200mm f/2.8. I have been needing a decent telephoto lens for a while now. I can't tell you how many cool wildlife shots I have missed. Even though I do mostly close up shots of the kids and plants and such, I see the need for a good telephoto as the kids get older and start in sports and other activities.

So am I doing the right thing? I know, very subjective...

If you're thinking about shooting wildlife, you should also consider the 1.4 extender. 200 isn't really that much reach.

That's the way it starts. Just one L lens. But after the 200 2.8, you will wonder how you could do with the 400 5.6, or the 70-200 with IS. And then you will know that those wide shots would be alot better with the 35 1.4.

So yes, you are doing the right thing. But don't think this one is going to be your only L lens.

That is next on the the list. I realized going into this that 200mm would not give me all the reach that I wanted but I just couldn't afford the some of the bigger L lenses. Well, maybe I could have, but, being the child at heart that I am, mwink.gif I didn't want to wait to save that much money. So that extender is definitely going to be purchase and some time.

Yes, once you travel down the L road, there is no turning back. Some even cross over into the dreaded Zeiss pit of despair.:D

Seriously though, as an avid animal and nature photographer whose first L was the 70-200 2.8 IS L, 200 is no where near enough length.

Think about the 300 4.0 IS L with an extender or the 400 5.6 L. Buy used. I did with no regrets.

I think the used market is just fine. Be the way to get long glass
for less money. You'll be wishing for the 500 like I wish for the
    600 :D

    My dissonance or indecisiveness
is getting the best of me. Anyhow, after doing even more reading on the subject, I decided that wanted a telephoto zoom lens instead of one of fixed focal length, so I cancelled the previous order and ordered the EF 70-200L f/4 series telephoto zoom. And yes, the extender is the next purchase. :D It should be here just in time for a trip to the Texas Hill Country. I should have plenty of time to try it out. thumb.gif Of course, since I can't afford the IS versions, I am going to be ordering a tripod soon as well.

I think I will have to buy used for my next purchases. I can't keep doing this and pay all the bills. :D

I think that's an excellent decision. I was going to sugges a 70-200, but was cognizant of your budget issues.

Phew! There are just so many decision to be made because they are so many lenses from which to choose. It's can get mind-boggling. It's enough to drive one to drink. :booze

Yeah, it's called Lcoholism. No meetings for it though since none of us would attend anyway. :D
