I think this image suffers because the only real white in the image is the blown out white sky. There are no real highlights anywhere else in the image, and thus the subjects look grayish.
I think more contrast is needed in the subjects faces - the sky is blown and that's just fine - so get better curves in the area of the subjects faces with real highlights,
