What does nickname change do?

I searched for this but didn't find the answer...

My nickname is the same as my smugmug address, right? For example, if my nickname was "scumbag" then my address would be "scumbag.smugmug.com".

Now what if I don't want to be known as Scumbag anymore. When I go into my control panel and change my nickname, say to "chumley", what happens?

Does my URL automagically switch to "chumley.smugmug.com"? And does "scumbag.smugmug.com" disappear, and are all external links to my photos broken?
