How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Not to worry. My master plan is to get the D3X for regular shooting, the D3H for action shooting, keep my D2X for wildlife shooting and to convert my D100 to IR (I miss shooting IR since i gave my 717 to my son).
As soon as I inform my beloved Linda of this plan and its cost she will beat me to death with my Beach Rolly :grim . Upon hearing of my demise you should be able to pick up all of my gear at baragin prices.

While I promise to grieve for you, I also promise to get over it quickly using your equipment!
Wishing you a long and happy life in between.

No, ED means that Extra-low Dispersion elements were used in the lens. Most of Nikon's pro glass are ED lenses but so are the 18-55mm, 18-70mm and the awful 55-200mm "kit" lenses.
Here's a good link that explains Nikon's lens acronyms http://bythom.com/lensacronyms.htm[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]

With that caveat out of the way, I believe ED stands for "Extra Definition". It does imply more quality, but I would "rely" on lens reviews, actual photographs (PBase is a good place to search for samples), tests and other anecdotal information for more valid gauges of quality. Even then, individual lenses may have different qualities, so you can still get a stinker even if you pay "lotsa bucks".
Always test your own equipment to determine how you are going to use it.

PS I blew it big time on the Nikon acronym for ED. I was using this description for a Nikon 28-70mm, f2.8 lens, "Ideal mid-range zoom lens for architecture and portraiture / ED Lens Design offers Extra Definition with virtually no distortion."
Harry knows best, as usual.
