great capture and colours...... have you tried cropping a little off behind the butterfly say through the purple flower, as this will give better balance to your shot

But why not try the crop tool just once, who knows, you might even like it!?!

Nope -the viewfinder is my only crop. I was concerned that the image is too centered and that there is too much dead space behind the butterfly -and after 2 posts recommending a crop it's pretty much confirmed.
It's been a while since I've shot butterflies, so my composition was a little off. More practice...

Hey, I didnt recommend a crop on this pic, I just meant in general. I just find it a bit amusing that you hate the crop tool so much. That said you have a great eye for composition so you might do fine without it..:):

Thanks :
It's not that I hate the crop tool -I just don't want to get lax when composing with the camera and find myself dependent on it... :uhoh
I think your in camera crop is a little to tight and centered. The empty space on the right bothers me a tiny, tiny, bit. Other than that it's composed nicely.
A little crop now and then won't break the camera or computer...don't be so hard on yourself Dalantech we'll still enjoy your macros whether you crop or not.... We all do it to some degree.

Wonderful pic whatever crop you do or don't do on it. Do agree with the others it would have been even better with the butterfly a bit lower and to the left. I often get totally stuck with some bug shots especially high mag ones where I'm torn between composition and Identification requirements and often end up somewhere in between satisfying neither

*Dal wonders if the butterfly would survive being mailed to Australia if there were sufficient air holes in the envelope*
