Have you tried under exposing by -2/3 to -1 when you shoot in aperture or shutter priority? You can bring up the exposure in post processing, under exposing will cause the colors to saturate, it will "soften" a bright background, and you'll gain 3/4 to a full stop...
Also a ?: Did you crop your images, or are those full frame? I tried my luck with a 70-200mm F4 L last night (way too much wind) but the focus ring was damaged in shipping. So I'm looking to get a good lens for shooting butterflies...
