Viewer Choice always defaults to Slideshow?

Anyone have any idea why I very often get the "Slideshow" interface when I visit a gallery set to "Viewer Choice"? Is this really the default or is there some type of cookie problem / problem with my smugmug page? I get this all the time on smugmug galleries owned by all sorts of people - not just my own.

    It will happen in one of three cases:

    1) you last were in "slideshow" style
    2) the gallery owner forces slideshow style
    3) you follow a link that has slideshow style in it (see my faq)
