Photo Seminar???

So I am out on the boat last Sunday... As we drive by the beach, there are all of these photographers and flashes going off. Probably 40-50 photographers. Then I see there are some girls in swim suits in the water. So I grab my camera and take some shots (I had it with me for the wakeboarding shots posted earlier)...
It looked something like this:
So I did what any photographer would do... pulled the boat up to the beach and got out to learn what was going on and to take some shots...
What I realized was I just crashed some type of photo seminar. What I am not sure of is what the purpose was. The whole thing looked like chaos. Everyone trying to get their little spot to shoot each model, models randomly posing, no order, no reflectors, no instructor.
My question is this, have any of you ever done this kind of seminar? Did you learn anything? Would you do it again? Can you really call any shots you took their, "your shots"? Since someone else set the whole thing up. My quick assessment was this would not be something I would be interested in.
