Newly uploaded pics as favourites, or something?

I want to have a part on my homepage like the 'most popular photos' pane, but that only shows a selection of the most recent uploads

Is there a way to do this other than either have a separate gallery for new uploads?

    No, not at present. Feature your new gallery, create a special link to a date gallery for just new photos, that would work, too.
