Well I certainly wouldn't bet on it, but it looks like it could be a large Red-tailed Hawk. Without seeing the tail fanned out it is really hard to say. It looks to be a pretty good sized hawk, but there is nothing else in the picture for reference. Around here we also have Red-shouldered Hawks, which are a might bit smaller, but again the angle is wrong to see the distinguishing markings.

All-in-all I think it is a good capture. I have been trying for years to get one of the Red-tailed Hawks that fly around my neighborhood, but to date the closest I have gotten is this one, and it is with a 70-300mm G @ 300mm.

Not very impressive. But you can see where they got there name, although Orange-tailed Hawk might be more appropriate.

The thing with photographs is....even if it's not good technically, us guys that took them sure can remember the situation involved in the capturing process. Therein lies the real value IMO.

I went down a gravel road out in the sticks that I'd never been down before because I figured it would intersect with the small river that I frequent. So with nothing to do while buzzing along at 25 mph, I lit one up.
Naturally after one puff there was a dead giant oak tree with three hawks using it for a lookout! Well..........no shot! Damn cigarettes.

You can hand hold BIFs with 400mm, and sometimes with 500mm on a tripod. 600mm and longer begin to make it hard to follow most BIFs.

400 is usually the best compromise between reach and hand holdablity.

Good shot and well exposed Ric, but a little on the soft side, which you can correct on the next capture. Even though it's out of range, it's still a nice shot. :): :):
