It's terrifying and gratifying watching these kids grow up. Seems like yesterday I was teaching him to swim. Now, he's out in the big waves, nothing to it!
Hi Andy,
pretty good shot. I think few people appreciate how difficult beach photography can be due to typically extremly high contrast. The gaze from water or sand or both can play havoc with the camera's light meter.
As for the kids, too true. My son is only a bit older than yours and last year he stayed in safety of books only to shock us with decision to play ice hockey - this from a kid that never did anything dangerous or any team sports.

Yeah, he's pretty darn good at the skimboard!
I'm kind of looking forward to being out of the toddler stage... skateboards, bicycles, surf/skimboards... bring 'em on!
2) if you're shooting at the direction of the water, in high bright sun, the wave tops will have a tendency to blow out - so you have to make a decision - do you want to expose for your main subject (the boy in this case) or the overall scene (if you were shooting a landscape, let's say)? Here, I wanted to neutralize the deep shadows as much as possible, so I chose to add +1/3 ec, not caring what happened to the wave tops. Turned out, they were recoverable after all
Hey he looks like he's having an absolute ball
They just grow up way too fast Andy don't they ...... great shot.
Hope your all enjoying your holiday ...... Skippy (Australia)
Nice capture. I really like the feeling of tension I get in the angles of the skim board and his arms. You can feel that he's coiled and ready to spring into motion in the direction of his gaze. Are there sequential frames?
Great shot, Andy. It sure is a beech to shoot at the beach. Our yearly great-aways always posed a problem for me, and funny as it is we've been on the west coast of FL for a year and a half and I still haven't been to a beach. Thankfully, The Mrs. likes to take the girls.
I dont know about beach photography because never been to beach yeah once in USA where i was going to drown
but i really loved this photo clarity and expressions are beautiful :

Great shot, he really looks happy.
I'm glad you mentioned this! Some pointers:
1) if you are shooting a scene mostly on the sand, and it's bright sun, then you'll want to be overexposing probably +2/3s to even a full stop:
