I've been doing a lot of macro shots lately, using my 100 mm macro lense. Now for my next purchase I'm looking at buying one of the following: 1) Canon 580EX speedlite 2) 70-200 mm f/4 L lense. Mostly I shoot macro's of insects. I also do like to shoot an occasional portrait now and then. Thanks for the help =).

You don't say which portrait lens you have. Regardless, the one you
have should also work for portraits.

The 580 would be good for your macros and portraits ... I think the 70-200 at F4 is right on the edge of too much DOF for a formal portraits. The 70-200 F4 is a nice lens ... light weight when compared to its big brother the 2.8.

I have the 430 EX, not quite as powerful as the 580 but has similar bells and whistles at about $100 cheaper. You might want to look into that as well if you don't need the power.

The 580 is a great flash for macro. The e-ttl feature works very well. I sent a reply to your PM just now. Somehow I missed your PM earlier.
