These are real photographs of muticolored lights playing against a rotating string. The first is an un-photoshopped image capture, the others have been "tweaked" with various filters and adjustments:

    The first one is a totally unmolested image. The second one I did very little (levels and saturation only). I will be playing with this again but to capture the colors you have to use a moderately fast shutter speed (1 sec) or else you just end up with a yellowy white glowing mess.

    Basically it is 2 cheapy electric motors from your local hobby shop and a selectable color mini strobe light from Spencer Gifts.
    Place the strobe under the rotating string and you get 3D rainbow shapes from a single string. You can build it for under $30 bucks!
