A Heron in love
Hi you'll,
I just completed did a photo workshop with one of our local pros as part of our area's annual wildlife and birding festival. I've never got a bird in flight shot that I've been happy with but the pro, Joanne Williams http://www.joannewilliamsphoto.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=5feeab2e04c3dc75496212d3f252b680
gave me some help. I got this pic which was the start of a heated heron mating session. Theres some blur on the arriving male but its one of the best flight shots I've gotten so far.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

John,
I've missed you over at STF and was wondering where you had gone.
I'm doing great. Linda and I love Florida and the new house is shaping up fine. I just did my Thanksgiving shopping in a T-shirt and shorts. Bit of a change from NYC. I would have responded sooner but I was taking a dip in the hot tub:D
I'm really getting into wildlife photography. I'me just about to order the Nikon 300mm/f4 lens and I've got another photo workshop scheduled for the end of this week with Ron Reznick.

Your shot is very impressive. The image is so large and fills the frame.
The blue herons along the Wabash river in western Indiana seem to not allow one to get closer than about 75 yard or so and thus, capturing full viewfinder images is extremely challenging. I did manage to get a few shots last fall with a 100-400 from a drifting 16 foot boat. You really must try this for a kick - trying to stand in a rocking, drifting boat and focus on a heron in flight intent on leaving the area with a long telephoto. I have come to a much higher respect for good bird photographers and their patience and skill.
This is one of my captures with a 10D
Were you able to get closer with the birds involved in reproductive thoughts? The only antelope photo shots I ever got, were with a buck in rut busy chasing a doe. Otherwise they are just gone.

If this is the start of the season, I'll be looking forward to seeing more of these photos! I'd be pretty excited if I got a shot like this :-)

Dee,
Its good to see you over here. I was real excited with that shot. It made the whole workshop worthwhile on its own. Hopefully I'll be able to get in a few more pics before they all cool down.

Hey Mel,
Thanks, I'm real happy with the final version myself. It does look better here. Thats probably because this version was loaded up from my hard drive and didn't go through pbase's compression like the version I posted on STF.
