Clutch ? I thought it was a small handbag that matches your pumps. That or a device for engaging and disengaging two working parts of a shaft or of a shaft and a driving mechanism.

Then shift without the clutch! I had to do that a couple of times back in my stock car racing days. (gee...that was fun!)
