Can Skype be used as voicemail only, without anything other than a laptop and internet connection?

Yes... that's the way I started with them. SkypeIn number, and you get the VoiceMail with it. Later on I then purchased the SkypeOut using the same number. You can get an incoming number in just about any city that you choose to have a presence, or have multiple SkypeIn numbers.

Best part about it is you can check your VM anywhere you have an Internet connection with out the baggage of a special router or hardware. Personally, I have a small USB headset I use on the road and a better one at home.

When I had Verizon Broadband service and used my laptop at different locations, I was able to use Skype as long as my Internet connection was good.

If all I want is voicemail, do I still need to install the Skype software or can I do everything through a web browser?

From what I can tell, there is no auto-renewal even with a subscription, so discontinuing use should not be a hassle?

Somewhere I read that the Skype software will cause all phone numbers on the computer to become hightlighted(?) by the software, is this correct, what really happens and can it be deactivated/not activated?

From my experience, you will need to install the software to pull review your calls. I believe subscriptions are 3 months at a time or one year. Either way, it's cheap. Insofar as number being highlighted in your browser, that is only if you specifically download a plug-in for your browser and install it.

I still looking at getting a skype number, but I had another question.

If I have a skypin number and I am not near a computer, can you call that number and check voicemail through a phone call?

Tried the Logitech STX ($35 from costco) Poor video - returned
Tried the Logitech quickcam pro 9000($140 from Staples, they refused to PM internet prices) Maybe 25% better video.

Tried a serial attached mic, best audio quality.

Is this to be expected from Skype? Any other cams to try?

Sympatico is my ISP, and speeds are OK , checked with DSL reports.

Does anyone know whether SkypeOut can deal with those annoying automated call routing systems "Press 1 to hear muzak, press 2 to hear marketing crap..."? In normal computer-to-computer mode, there's no equivalent of the keypad.

I use Skype specifically for video conference with friends and clients across the world, computer to computer. For actual telephone calls I use a magicJack, unlimited local and long distance in the US and Canada. $20 a year... The phone is connected to your computer, you have an actual number so people can call you and the buttons do work to select options both on the phone and computer.
