looking to the future..

I think I will upgrade to a power user. I know I cannot choose my domain name.

but whilst I cannot afford pro user now, I dont want to loose my domain name idea if I start customising my sight in power user.

Can I buy my domain name now, use power for a year or so and later use my domain name when I subscribe to a pro account? would this work?

How do you buy a domain name?

Thanks

Here is some information from smugmug’s help pages for pro users’ custom hostnames.
    http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts

They list several domain registrars and domain configuring for those companies.

You could also Google for “domain registration” for additional registration companies.

It would probably be best to get your domain name sooner than later…

However, I would not recommend GoDaddy. My site host and I just had to go through the CNAME/redirect routine with them yesterday.
First, they claimed they couldn't do a CNAME.
Then it was, they couldn't do a CNAME unless they hosted my site. (Which aint goin' ta happen.)
It finally took a personal phone call from my host to their tech support, pointing out I already had 3 other CNAMES, for them to make the change.

My take: If they are going to lie about something like that, or their CS reps are that incompetent, then... why not go where it's not a hassel?

Does this require some expensive hardware or is it labor intensive? headscratch.gif

Edit to add: CS stands for Customer Service not the other.

Haha... no. Sorry, I know its frustrating, I've been through the ringer with them as well.

Samuel, I would reccomend you look into:

    namecheap.com
    dotster.com

    In that order...

just the opposite experience for me
I've had no problems with godaddy-- even the CNAME part (which I figured out using the smugmug directions). I switched from joker when I wanted to get an e-mail account through godaddy and they offered me up a great deal on a domain and e-mail.

But... I've read other posts here voicing CNAME and customer service concerns with godaddy before. Just haven't had any problems with them myself.

I have similar positive experiences with GoDaddy. Changing CNAME etc., was a bit burried in their menu-system, but they pointed me to the right pages when i asked. And i love that they give you a free e-mail account (small account, great for forwarding).

I registered my domain name 3-4 years ago and only now use it with my smugmug account. Get the name you want now. You're going to be paying for it in perpetuity anyway, so why wait.

I can also recommend www.domainpeople.com. This was not the registrar I started with. Every registrar has different features and benefits, but what I like about this registrar is my ability to have unlimited email aliases where I get to choose the email redirect (on an individual basis). Many allow you to have unlimited (or a very large number in any case) of email aliases, but they all get redirected to the same email address. This is a useful function for me.

For what it's worth, the reason I changed registrars was not the cost, and not the features and benefits, but because of support. I wanted a registrar that had 24/7 support for both email or voice. There are lots of smaller registrars that have email only or limited live support. Although I still generally use email, there are times when a real person on the other end is great to have.

    Just my 2 cents worth,

    Regards,

The cheapest and and easiest to use doamin registrar, that I have ran across has been GO DADDY ......every once in a while Yahoo domains will run a new customer first year speacial for $1.99...as they are right now....buy your name and park it until you are ready to use it.....what I have done was to buy it at yahoo, then when ready to use it transfer to Go Daddy and get a free 25mb webmail email box..this free mail box is customizable as far as YournName@YourDomain.com ..... so your email could be Sales@YourDomain.com or Info@YourDomain.com ..... GoDaddy will also let you park you Doamin for free, I am not sure if Yahoo allows you to park for free or not....Go Daddy also gives you free I page (not sure of size as I never used that feature.

    Good luck.

Any tricks around the domain name problems?
Been two weeks now building my smugmug site in preperation of shutting down my personal "built by hand" photo web site. Fully committed now, but late in the game I discovered the problems of assigning my personal domain name to my smugmug Power account.

I understand that I can assign or redirect a personal domain name to a smugmug Power account, but that users who arrive this way will not be able to receive smugmug cookies. Therefore they can't set viewing options or use the shopping cart. Is this correct?

I understand I can solve those problems by upgrading to a Pro smugmug account, but I'm not sure it's a $100 (per year) problem yet. I just want users who have bookmarked my personal domain name to be directed to my smugmug site. I don't care how the URLs in the smugmug pages look. I don't care if the users coming to my personal domain have to go through a front-end page to click on something to get to the smugmug site.

So I could live with a single page that redirects users to smugmug. But I don't want to pay for and maintain a personal web site for just that one page.

Any creative ideas on how I can get that one page for free?

I'm in the process of transfering my domain name registration to Godaddy. Art Scott mentioned a free "I page" at GoDaddy. What is that?

if I register my domain name now, but dont use it for a while, should I set the settings for a CNAME that directs it to Smugmug immediately or should I wait until I am ready to use it?......which is sometime in the never ending future (year or two)

Most registrars allow you to park your page.
This means that when you don't 'use' your domain-name, it will lead - when used in a browser - to an "Under Construction" page.

Until you change your CNAME-records and start using it. :)

Here is the link to what you get for free at Go Daddy.....

    https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/domain_offer.asp?se=%2B&ci=5867

The free starter page is almost at the bottom on the left side of screen.

BTW the red Go Daddy was a clik able link to Go Daddy.....
