    Great shot...
Nice shot Bill... I'm assuming these were taken with a flash (either on camera or placed somewhere nearby). Do you find the flash interferes with the riders? Do they mind the flash going off?

    Cheers,
    Kenny

1D Mark II with a 580EX attached and a Canon external battery pack. I'm always amazed that the riders do not mind the flash, and I've asked a lot of riders.

No, local race, strickly amateur. It was a benefit race for an injured rider (bad injury, but recovering well). Luckily nobody got injured too bad during the benefit race for the injured rider. :)

Do the riders mention if they even notice the flash? I wonder if it is noticable under the stadium lighting on the track. Their intense focus probably helps too.

    Very cool shot.

Sorry maybe not a very clearly worded question.

You said the riders did not mind the flash going off which means to me that they see it and are not bothered. What I was actually wondering was if they even see the flash at all, considering that the track must be pretty brightly lit to be able to race at night.

    Just curious.

Aha. You'd be surprised how poorly lit the tracks are for night racing. Normally my ambient exposure might be as much as two stops underexposed, maybe a bit less. I had a devil of a time photographing at night with a 20D but the 1D Mark II has made a big difference. That is how little light there is. So they definitely see the flash. But its so brief that it doesn't bother them. I also don't use hi-speed synch at night shooting, so the flash burst truly is very brief. Though bright!
