A photographic study of powerlines

Hi y'all,

Lets get one thing straight before we do the pictures. You will see power lines. If these power lines offend stop right now!!!!!!! Do not go any further.

I don't want to hear any of those "oh, the shot would be better w/o the power lines" comments. These damn birds love the frigging power lines and there's nothing I can do to change their minds. He have a gazillion trees around here but they like power lines. Consider it a statement of how caracaras are adapting and learning to live with man's intrusion into their environment.

Now that we have that straight here are the shots:

I was driving to the wetlands when I came upon a parent and a juvenile caracara sitting on a power line
86681345-O.jpg

The juvie seem to be chewing off the parent's ear
86681341-O.jpg

They spent a lot of time just looking out
86681348-O.jpg

The parent knowing they had to look respectable since they are the national bird of Mexico took some time to groom itself.
86681353-O.jpg

The juvie like all teenagers had no sense of decorum
86681349-O.jpg

the juvie started to get restless (typcal teen)
86681354-O.jpg

time to hit the road
86681356-O.jpg

Naturally he flew a bit and joined his other parent who was sitting on another section of the frigging power line.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Harry those powerlines would have looked much better without those pesky birds on them rolleyes1.gif. Great shots. The light looked lovely in the first three shots, had a nice yellow glow.

Birds gotta perch somewhere! I get tired of hearing the same old tired rhetoric too.

    Great shots again, Harry. :D

I like it when you can get them just before takeoff.

Nothing wrong with a bird using the urban jungle as a vantage point, love the last one by the way, perfect timing as he turns and launchesthumb.gif
    May I take your picture?

Very attractive set, Harry. That 500mm lens sure does capture the details. I wonder how many Social Security checks I would need to get me one (but Canon, of course)?

Thanks Nick. It was early morning and the sun was rising to the right of the birds and they were lit up with that warm early light.

Oh, how nice, Harry's doing a photographic essay on power line configurations in Florida -- Yay, no birds for once. You can imagaine my disappointment. I was looking forward to some Harryb artistic intepretation of powerlines!:cry

Thank you Ric. I think the next time someone has a bird in a tree I'm going to say "nice shot but it would have been better if the bird was on a power line, no leaves to block the subject you know" rolleyes1.gif

Thanks Gil. The 500 is an outstanding piece of glass. I took a few shots with my 80-400 before I set up the tripod and the 500 and it didn't come close to the 500 except for one shot.

It would take quite a few SSA checks to get the Canon version.:uhoh
