email?

I have Comcast cable and internet service at home. We've just learned that Time Warner Cable is taking over all Comcast accounts in SoCal.

An advisory letter sent by TW indicates that I may continue using my " ...@comcast.net " email address for one year before I need to switch to TW.

Since I've undergone previous switches, from AOL, to MSN, to Comcast, I don't look forward to having to do this yet again and I hope to do it only one last time.

I'm thinking of switching to a web-based service but I don't like Yahoo. I'm aware of but know little about Gmail. I also prefer to continue using Outlook as my email program.

Any advice on the future of email? :):

Gmail is great and you can continue using Outlook as your mail client. No ads at all if you do it that way. PM me with your email address and I'll send you an invite if you like.

Gmail is great although I can't seem to get ride of my 100 invites.

However............

If you are really concerned about keeping the same @yourname.com and not having to switch that around best bet is buy a domain name and setup email aliasing and forwarding, if you don't want an actual website.

My email address will never change unless I want it to.

That said like the guys below I have had my hotmail account for over 8 years. Same with my yahoo.com account.

But still boils down to at that point you are at their mercy. If you don't own the domain you can't decide what happens to it.

I have had my hotmail account for about 10 years. Had it before msn bought them out. It has had some nice improvements. Never tried gmail, I am sure it will work well for you.

I can see how frustrating it would be to have to change email addresses. The great thing about a internet based email is you can check from any computer anywhere. This is convient when out of town, on vacation, etc. I can't imagine only being able to check email from home. Well good luck

hotmail is nice, but you only get 250mb's of space, with gmail you get a gig, if not more.

both can forwarded to your outlook. if you ask me, i'd say its safe to say that google isn't going anywhere. however, like dragon said, the only safe way is to get your own domain and set up email through that. domain names are cheap these days and cost as little as a couple of bucks a year. plus an email address specific to you looks a lot more professional than a hotmail, yahoo, gmail account imo.
bored? check out my photo site...and if you have the time, leave a comment or rate some pictures while you're there.

GMail is definitely the way to go and works seamlessly with Outlook (though I prefer Thunderbird) when you enable POP3 (anyone can do this and they have plenty of docs on how to do so). When using their webmail, it's very intuitive, integrated with Google Talk (can also save your conversations for future reference) and all the other Google services.

Like everyone else, I have plenty of invites...

I have three web-based accounts. Only one is free.

Earthlink
USA.Net
GMX.CO.UK

I use the Netaddress the most. Reasonable price, lots of storage.

I haven't downloaded mail to my computer in several years.

yep only get 250mb of space with hotmail, but I have 20 pages of emails and I am only at 50% of capacity.

Its what I use but if I started today I sure would check out others. I am just used to it and don't want to switch.

I've had an account with excite.com for at least 10-15 years and it's been great. There's a free account level, but I don't know offhand what services it provides. The premium account is $20/yr and adds POP access, email-forwarding, spam-blocking and 2GB of space and then some.

I also agree that having your own domain name is another great option.

thank you all very much.
based on the feedback I corralled my IT guys and asked about domain names etc....

seems simple enough to set up accounts through GoDaddy.com

Whatever it takes I have plenty of info to work from when the time comes.
Thanks again.

Sorry to repeat after what others said...
... I have both hotmail (for 10 years or so) and gmail (for 2 years or so).
I also used to have usa.net, but closed that account long time ago, when they started charging.
Hotmail came a long way since the times they were independent dot-com startup, and now provides a decent set of features.
However, for what I need, gmail is DA absolute winner. Multiple identities, extremely easy navigation, labels, smart tagging (ability to recognize such things as urls, street adresses, ups tracking numbers and provide proper actions for them on a side bar)... and you can even use it a an FTP storage with a - free - GMail Drive tool, which incorporates your gmail account right into your windows explorer tree.
All in all, I'd say - get GMail! thumb.gif
Or both, and decide for yourself:-)

Angelo if you need help getting something setup through the godaddy.com method with a actual domain name let me know and I will walk you through hundreds of setup options to get it to work how you want. I really think you will be happiest that way. You can keep one email address that way no matter who your provider is, what webmail service you use, etc.
