At the moment I've been shooting alot of Osprey photo's as well mountain biking and climbing. Before the osprey have baby ospreys, I want to buy a better lens to capture them. So far I'm thinking the 100-400 IS USM L is my choice as it still gives me some play with zoom to cover a few different shooting genres. Any advice on whether I'm looking in th right direction would be greatly appreciated :thumb

I've had that lens for almost a year, and really like it. I normally shoot different kinds of birds, but am quite happy with the results.

This is from the observation deck on top of the Empire State Building at 400mm, literally the first day I had the lens (bought it at B&H and went for a walk around Midtown)

Out on Fire Island, at 190mm

I'm part of an aircraft spotter/photo group in NY, and we must have a dozen guys with the 100-400, and I haven't heard any complaints about it. I've also used it to shoot auto racing (Nascar at Pocono) and baseball (Mets & minor league) with satisfactory results.

    Hope this helps, good luck!

Thats a tough question mushy. I use primes & wont have it any other way. (400 & 135 prime) I like to have the lens make me shoot to a frame other than making what i call 'postcards' & i actually shoot stuff similar to you with downhill & of recent..the whales & surfing.

Some people would suggest that i trade off on versatility but i love the speed of focus & the sharpness of prime lenses. Thats just me though & im pretty weird. As a good friend once said me .." watching you take a photo is like watching a speedway car go over the fence & into the crowd "

    Good luck mate...that a tough decision 1drink.gif

Cheers for the words of wisdom eek7.gif ,I think I will run the gauntlet and go the zoom. As long as I never try a prime hopefully I won't wish I had bought one instead!:D
