Sloss Iron Works, in Birmingham Alabama, operated from 1882-1972. The rise of the town of Birmingham, built at the confluence of two major railroads, was intimately connected to these iron works; which were at the center of post war rebirth of southern industry and power.

I love heavy industrial shots. I'll be doing a series later this year once the temps cool off. It's way too hot right now to be shooting in an active smelting operation.

Looks like you were visiting in my backyard. Did you get some of the interesting stories about working conditions back when the furnaces were in their prime.
"A photo is like a hamburger. You can get one from McDonalds for $1, one from Chili's for $5, or one from Ruth's Chris for $15. You usually get what you pay for, but don't expect a Ruth's Chris burger at a McDonalds price, if you want that, go cook it yourself." - me

Not really, there isn't much in the way of explanation at the iron works, and I didn't see anyone working there. It looks maintained, but unmanned.

Wow, cool shots! I was in Birmingham for my cousin's wedding in late June, and we actually went to Sloss, too. It was *hot* that day, so we couldn't take our time as much as we'd like. Fun place to run around, though.

It was pretty hot yesterday (100+ I think) but I only get to Birmingham twice a year, and the last time I showed up 5 minutes before a security guard locked up, so I just downed a bottle of water and had at it.

    It's a dangerous job!:D
