New Lens

Hello everyone!

I purchased my first dSLR camera (digital rebel xt) recently, and I had a question about my first lens purchase. I go to numerous concerts, and I usually use my camera for concert shots (lowlight and lots of movement) or things of that nature, so I was looking at getting a lens better suited for that kind of photography rather than the standard lens that came with my camera. I read that a Canon 50mm f1.8 would be a good starter lens at a low price since I'm not looking to spend tons of money. My question is how close would I need to be to get good shots with this kind of lens.. would I have to be in the pit to get close-up shots? Would it be better to just buy a lens with a reasonable zoom? I don't plan on being in the rafters at a concert, but sometimes ten feet matter. Thanks for your help!

The Canon 50mm f1.8 is a really good buy and works well for club scenes and small venues. You can't go wrong buying this lens they ony run about $70. A super deal. I'm not sure about concerts, but you might want to check out this thread for information about shooting live music and what equipment and accessories are good, plus techniques in shooting.

I tend to avoid slow zooms for obvious reasons, I would agree with previous post that Primes are the way to go.I use several old non AF primes Nikkor 135mm f2 being my fav. 16mm,50mm and 85mm also have a place in my bag. Low light situation demand fast lenses if you want to maintain the quality of the image a avoid increased noise. Unfortunately Canon Non AF primes won't work with your camera without an adapter and this may not be the way you wish to go. Horses for courses.

I do mainly low-light concert photography (for fun) and have both the 50mm 1.4 and 70-200mm 2.8

The lens that almost ALWAYS finds itself on my camera is the 70-200. This lens does really great low-light shots. The 1.4 is great too for those incredibly dark cheesy night-clubs.
