How to send RAW files

by e-mail in blulk. I took two 2gb CF cards of RAW photos when my son was here.

He wants me to e-mail him all of them. I don't know how? Can it be done?

Is there an easy way to do it? W/o changing them to jpgs.

He said to use winzip. To be honest, I haven't used winzip in so long I don't know if I still have it. But would it be useful in this case if I did?

Do you all know how to send folders of RAW files by e-mail?

Ginger that is too much to send through e-mail. I would suggest burning them to a DVD and mailing it.

headscratch.gif Doesn't make much sense to use a compression program to compress RAW files, when the whole point of a RAW file is that it isn't compressed. ne_nau.gifheadscratch.gif

Thanks, Nick, that is what I suspected.

It kind of blew my mind, actually, smile.

    Thanks for responding!

you can send it via yousendit.com

You'd have to break it into chunks, but it could be done.

Not saying it's better, just that you could.

Sid, thanks for answering. The only thing I can think of is that he has no idea what a RAW file is.

Actually, even though he is my son, I feel like saying that I do not send my files.

I mean, I make mistakes, some are blurry or need work. The idea of shooting as freely as I did that day, without consistent lighting, etc, and then sharing ALL the results kind of makes my skin crawl.

At the same time, well, he is my son, and I wanted to please him. But if he doesn't know what a RAW file is, he can't process it, I would imagine.

    thanks again,

Sure it does, you could use stuffit or some lossless compression that is expanded on the receiving end.

If, as you suspect, he doesn't know what RAW files are then why send them?

Explain the files are two big to email and ask if he really needs the RAW files and why. I bet he'll concede to .jpgs

Or..... do you know anyone with an FTP site? you can temporarily transfer the files on a direct upload and he can drag an drop the files on his end.

There is 4 gig of data to transfer, even breaking it into chunks and using stuff it or a similar compression program I don't think it is worth the effort. Ginger even though it is possible to send the files over the internet it doesn't mean you have to, or it is easier. I still stick to my original suggestion of DVD's. Or just process the ones you think are the best and e-mail those as jpgs.

Well a GMail account allows 10GB transfers, and I have transfered .mov files thru it with no problem. So get a Gmail acct, I can send you an your son and invite if you like.

Winzip the files. Two reasons: 1) makes the total file size smaller. It puts them back the way they were before, so it isnt like RAW vs JPEG, where you have lossy compression in the photos, and 2) it puts all the images into one file, making it much easier to send and receive. By the way, if you use Windows, especialy XP, simply select the files in Explorer, right click and choose Send To> Compressed Folder. This will zip the files, without the need for WinZip.

Another option: Hello. Love this program. It is a companion to Picasa. Basically, Hello is IM for photos. You and your son get Hello on your PCs, then sign in. You drag photos to your Hello, and they get transfered to your son's PC directly, peer-to-peer. Perfect for folks you don't 'get' how to get photos out of email. It also waits for the other party to log on, queueing photos, and will transfer them in the background. Great program:

Again, just because you can doesn't mean you should, or it is easier. You said you have transfered large files, was it over a standard cable internet connection and if so how long did it take?

I have transfered .mov files of 7-8 GB routinely. How long does it take? Not sure, I click send and move on to other things. Yes cable connection. Geez I upload 500MB- 1 GB of photos to Smugmug in a given shoot, so I am not sure I see the real issue here.

Yes 10 GB is bigger, yes it will take longer....just be patient. Make it that last thing you do at nite: send it, turn off your monitor and go to bed. Wake up to a sent email.

The easiest thing to do for the nontechnilogically advance person would be for you to process them into jpegs and then put them up on smugmug so he can grab them that way.

If he knows how to use raw files though, I see nothing wrong with using winzip or winrar to compress the files into 1gb chunks and sending them via www.yousendit.com

winzip and winrar won't damage the files (in fact, it won't even compress them that much - it more or less just puts all your files into one big file, so instead of sending 40 raw files, you send one file with 40 raw files in it).

4gb's won't take that long to send over a cable connection, even if your upload is capped. Just set it up to send at night, and by the time you wake up in the morning, it'll be uploaded.
