Popular Photos revisited

So I checked out the "Popular Photos" feature on the main Smugmug page, since I haven't done it in a while. I went really expecting that time had done some filtering, and I would be treated to some nice work. But, it is still the same: a bunch of snapshots, many from what appears to be a handful of photographers. Disappointed.

But, in thinking about this, I think perhaps I am expecting something different. This is indeed a showing of the most 'popular' photos. This is a view of photos that visitors are looking at. This is the 'trackback' of photos. This isnt the 'Digg' of photos.

So, I think that is what I am after: I visit the site expecting to really see the 'best of Smugmug".

Any chance that an additional rating can be had here, one that votes on the 'best' photos?. Maybe something like PS star ratings, where you give a 5 star for the best...and it averages over time?

    Today's popular photos may have the chance to get some snappys up to the top but the all time popular photos are generally excellent shots. http://www.smugmug.com/popular/all deal.gif

    An interesting thing to me is that comments are one of the things that can bring up an image's rating. But not all comments are positive. I've seen images in popular today that got strongly negative comments.
