Support for PNG files???

First off, apologies since this is a very simple question. My excuses are:

1. The help on smugmug.com claims only GIF and JPG are supported but makes much reference to PNG in the watermarking section.

2. I tried searching here on dgrin but it always drops "PNG" from the search words, so no luck there.

Anywho, what is the story about PNG support on smugmug:

1. Can I upload PNGs?
2. Are PNGs stored on smugmug or are they converted to JPEG?
3. If they are supported, what formats (16-bit allowed?).

Thanks in advance to anyone who knows.

And again, I'm sorry, I *tried* to search the forum :).

Ken

    Yes

They stay PNGs. Originals are never changed.

I've uploaded PNG8 and PNG24. they both work just fine. Not sure what you mean with 16 bit. I'm not that png-savvy, sorry.

Cool! Thanks for your help! PNG is such a nice format compared to GIF!

PNG can store at 8 or 16 bits per color channel. I'll just give it a try myself.

    Thanks again for your help!

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll be sure to elaborate on PNG support in our help section ASAP thumb.gif

Just as a follow up, I gave a 16-bit per color channel image a try (48-bit total depth) and it worked just fine. Such files are huge and really aren't useful for web browsing (and take forever for uploading), but maybe if you wanted to back up something in 16-bit lossless format it'd be a way. I'd make it a private gallery though or your users will hate you and all your bandwidth will disappear quick!

One minor issue, when you do a "save photo" from a PNG smugmug sends a JPG file name. The file is in fact the original PNG file, it just has the wrong extension.

I've noticed that sometimes when you upload a png you get a png extension on all the various sizes that smugmug serves you and sometimes you get a jpg extension for everything but the O ne_nau.gif

I think that depends on the size of the file. Like if your file is smaller than a medium, the -M, -L, and -O will all be the same size (they might even be the same original file but i dont know for a fact) and will all have .png extensions. the only ones that get converted to jpgs are the resized ones.

That makes sense. I think I saw it on cart buttons and stars which are all obviously smaller than even the Ti sized images.

I am on an old thread reviving spree I think.
I uploaded a few PNG files, it uploaded them fine using the standard uploader, but the "verifying image" thingy did not appear at all, and when I check gallery, it shows nothing
    This is the Gallery
