Hickory Horned Devil

This lovely monstrosity was in a path while my Dad was out walking along the river this morning. Dad promptly picked him up and brought him to me to photograph. Since I was house cleaning I was quick to trade in the vaccuum for my camera. After our little photo shoot Dad drove him back down to the river and put hum on a Sweet Gum tree (their second favorite food).

This guy measured 5 inches when he was fully extended and was bigger around than my thumb. He would make a nice meal for a bird, if one could be found that was brave enough to eat him.....

Thanks everyone. I thought he was too cool not to share. I think of all the classes I would like to take, an extensive macro photography class would really be fun.

Wow, he is one weird looking caterpillar! Obviously with that coloring and horns, etc. he must be sending out a very negative message to birds, like don't mess with me!!!! Great shots by the way!
