    They certainly did. Cathedrals were designed to awe visitors and make them confront a bigger reality than they were used to, and to make them look up to heaven and their God. They were also a symbol of the church as a bridge between earth and heaven, thus the buildings reach high up in the sky.

    Now, if they can shock a 21st century world traveller, think about the effect on simple peasants just past the middle ages... bowdown.gif
