Hi Everyone, Dgrin challenge 72 is here. It will run from Monday August 21st at 12:00:01 a.m. NYC time, through Monday, September 4th at Noon NYC time. The guest judge for the challenge will be the winner of challenge 71, as determined by the voters.

As always, please take some time to comment and critique so all participants will get the most out of the Challenge. Please comment as often as you can.

The theme for Challenge 72 is STILLNESS

Thanks for the very appropriate suggestion Joan :thumb

So the theme for Challenge 72 is the opposite of Challenge 71. Your shot should convey a sense of stillness or of a moment frozen in time. Some of the entries submitted to Challenge 71 meet this criteria. Joan's idea of possibly re-shooting your Challenge 71 shot to convey stillness rocks :clap An example of the theme would be shots of things in motion, but with the motion frozen. Or, calm, placid, or still subjects that convey the theme.

Good luck to you all and as usual Dgrin Photo Challenge rules apply. Please read them here.

Steve

***Challenge STILLNESS will close to entries on Monday, September 4th at 12 Noon NYC time***

Please note that entries received after the challenge period ends are ineligible and will be deleted without notice.

    Tiger
What can be more still than a cat (or a tiger for that matter) before an attack. In that particular instance the tiger was hunting a bird. In the next second after the picture was taken the tiger jumped, but... missed.

Not really a dark person. Every time I was thinking about this challenge though all I could think of were tombstones and one other thing I hope to post soon. I still haven't had good lighting for that shot yet.

Note the lack of tombstones in the background showing isolation as well as stillness.

    Stillness in time at Ellwood
    90852499-L.jpg

The gas station and restaurant were built in 1929 for the Barnsdall-Rio Grande Oil Company. The restaurant was a lunchtime stopping place for many of William Randolph Hearst's guests when they drove from Los Angeles to Hearst Castle further up the coast. During WWII the Ellwood oil facilities nearby were shelled by the Axis on February 23, 1942 when a Japanese I-17 submarine commanded by Captain Nishino Kozo. Customers were scared away, and the gas station/restaurant complex failed. A remake of the movie "The Postman Always Rings Twice" was filmed here in 1981, but now the gas station stands still.
