I like the shot. I think it's worth going back into the RAW conversion and making two conversions, one for the whale and one for the water, and then compositing them so that you can have details in both the shadows and the highlights.
David shot in jpeg. I have no idea what you are talking about, do you mean do 2 layers & merge them ?
Tell you what..how about i put the original jpeg into a SM album with original downloads ok'd ..PM you the page & you can suck it down & see what you can do. In ?
I need to write a tute on that one. Marc Muench has his own special way of doing it. I'll make sure you see it when it's posted.
As for the JPEG, sure. All you can do there is Shadow/Highlights, but i'll take a crack at it. Rutt has a great tutorial on that in the how to link up top of the forums.
I missed this shot from a few weeks ago...no idea i just breezed over it & didnt like it at the time. So i started trying a few diff B&W sets. Hard to balance the extreams.

Wish I had of got something like that with my whale shots : http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=38887&highlight=southern+whale. mine definatly pale in comparison (infact looking at them again they just look like big fat blobs of blubber!)
