U12 Soccer in Jacksonville

My grandson is playing soccer here in Jacksonville and I went to his game Saturday to see what kind of pictures I could get. I am using a D200 with a 80-400mm VR lens. It was a partly cloudy day and the sun was playing havoc with my exposures. I was having trouble getting a shutter speed fast enough to stop the action without getting a pic that was too dark. Any suggestions on how to overcome this problem would be appreciated.

My grandson Avery is on the white team and is in the first and last pic.
I love the expressions on the kids faces.

    Good work!! thumb.gifthumb.gif

Like you I dig the facial expressions on these little guys....lol My only comment would be to make them bigger. IOW, crop some of these tighter. Especailly the 1st and last shots :D To much field and not enough of those cute expressions, IMO.

This one was shot at f5 @ 1/250 ISO 100. So you should have plenty of speed left. Either wider aperature, or higher ISO, even Nikon (lol3.gif ) can handle ISO's of 200 and 400. (sorry). sometimes the white shirts can fool your meter too, causing under exposure, a way to beat that is to use manual setting.

You've got some nice action shots in there. I think #3 and 4 are my fav's. Although, I have to agree w/ Steve that tighter crops will help bring out the action.

With regards to the shutter speed, what's the f/ value(s) on your lens? With my Canon 100-400, it's a variable f/ ranging from 4-5.6. So, when I'm zoomed out to close to 400, I have a smaller aperature, and have issues when shooting later in the day (or when it is too overcast); there the higher ISO helps. Could you also adjust your exposure compensation setting?

    good luck,

    C.
