pretty nice. i had a few comments on your site. it has been said here before but for football night games you really should try to use a fast lens like 2.8. if you dont have access to one, i guess there is nothing you can do.

also like i said on your site i try getting a tighter crop and/or using a longer zoom to get closer in the action. to be honest the graininess of high speed film doesnt bother me at all, but that is just me.

i dont have all of my football shots here yet but check these out if you want to.

not bad , there are some thing you could try if i new what you wanted out of the shots... ex.. stopping or freezing action.. i really like the candids of the kids not in action ..

Flash:Flash did not fire, compulsory flash modeExposure Program:Action program consider AV OR TV modes this is where i would start and i would change .. but then i want to stop,or freeze all action.. also set camera to center focus point.

found these

imgp8434f/5.6 ISO: 3200 Focal Length: 100mm (150mm 35mm) Exposure Time: 0.004s (1/250)Flash:Flash did not fire, auto modeExposure Program:Action program (<img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/headscratch.gif" border="0" alt="" > )
this is much better.. found this in the later pix... timing is good action is on just keep shooting... grain is not a problem but some shot seam to be worse than others... ?<img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/headscratch.gif" border="0" alt="" >
have a look at mine if you like .. not all of mine are up... no real night games yet.. www.allensphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/1816053

Rene,

The good news is your instincts are pretty good - you have a decent idea of what to shoot.

The bad news is your shutter speeds are way, way below what is needed.

Unfortunately night football is one of the toughest sports. 1/320 is the slowest acceptable shutter speed without flash IMO. You really need a 2.8 lens and shooting at ISO 1600 to have a remote chance at getting some keepers after the first quarter. It's not a knock on you at all - this is an equipment intensive sport. The unfortunate reality is even with that, you may need to use an external flash.

So, I would suggest investing in a good external flash - at least then you'll be able to freeze some action and get a few keepers - much better than what your current setup will provide. A 2.8 lens is ultimately necessary - but of course that's a lot more money.

By the way, here is a sample gallery of the last night game I shot (using Canon 20D, Sigma 120-300 2.8 lens and no flash):
Game started in ISO 800, progressed to 1600 by halftime and was at 3200 the entire second half. With the dark uniforms it was really horrible - I'm going to have to use flash in the future to get usable shots in the second half I think.
